Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group

By Irene Hirst – Accounts Manager Sanderson Associates

The 21st March 2013 marks the 8th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been recognised by the United Nations since 2012.

My eldest grandson Jack has Down Syndrome and recently embarked on an experience none of us will forget in a hurry.

The weekend at the start of half term week saw us set out on an exciting trip to London with Jack and his family. Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support GroupJack, as a result of modelling for a new council project and also for the new ‘all about me’ gallery at Eureka Children’s Museum, was asked along to The Langdon Down Centre in Teddington – home of the Down’s Syndrome Association, to join other child models with Down Syndrome with the aim of creating a striking image to publish in the press that would help raise awareness and promote equality/inclusion within advertising.

The shoot took place in the historical and stunning Normansfield Theatre which was established in 1868 by Victorian Physician Dr John Langdon Down (the founder of DS) as a family home and a place where people with learning disabilities could be cared for and educated.

The photo along with a short text about each child model featured in The Sun last Wednesday and will shortly feature in the Daily Mail in the run up to World Down Syndrome Day. Jacks mum, Leanne, is Communications Officer for Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group and with the assistance and support of Sanderson Associates IT team, created and launched the groups website.

Sanderson Associates continue to support the Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group with continued sponsored hosting of the Groups website on our server along with back up IT support when required.

Tandem Sky Dive Success

Hibaldstow Sky Dive

Last Saturday 8th September 2012, as part of our 25 year celebrations, two of our colleagues – Nicola Singleton and Peter Maurice jumped harnessed to the front of a fully qualified parachuting instructor from 15,000ft.

They enjoyed one whole adrenaline-fuelled minute of free fall reaching terminal velocity at 120mph.

Both said it was an exhilarating experience and one they would like to be able to do again.

Sanderson Associates Team Just Giving PageTheir jump was in aid of the Hollybank Trust at Mirfield, even though the jump has been completed we are continuing to gratefully accept sponsorship/donations to assist the Hollybank Trust, therefore if you are able to support us, then please visit the Team Just Giving Page.

If you wish to donate by the traditional method, then both Nicola and Peter have sponsor forms with them.

Please contact either Nicola or Peter direct so that we can arrange how you would like to make a donation.

Peter Pre Parachute Jump

A note from Nicola…

Well, I DID IT and survived to tell the tale.

What a fantastic and amazing experience; after waiting around for some 9 Hrs, the weather was just right for me to go at 6pm! I was not at all nervous until the instructor took the first step out of the plane, I screwed up my eyes and thought “oh my, what have I done” and my heart was in my mouth, I was gripping onto my harness until my fingers went white; after a second or two I was relaxed and enjoying the ultimate experience of free falling from 15,000ft to 6,000ft.

My instructor pulled the cord to open the canopy, on opening I felt an extra tug and the instructor went right (my immediate initial thought was that something had gone wrong) but he proceeded to talk me through the landing. On looking back at the video footage, at that point of the extra tug, it turned out that one side of the canopy didn’t immediately open fully. Yikes, glad I didn’t know at the time.

On landing I had so many emotions running through me; I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, it was just such an achievement, something I will not forget.

Some people have asked if I wasn’t in a tandem would I have jumped, the answer……..most certainly not; I never realised how high 15,000ft was until I was up there.

Thank you once again for your very kind and generous donations in support of the Hollybank Trust.

25 Year Celebrations – Charity Sky Dive

Sanderson Associates evolved in a house in Holmfirth in 1987, the ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ was a big attraction to Holmfirth and the beautiful surroundings. We have over the years expanded to be become one of the largest independently owned Highway Consultants in the UK.

We expanded to provide Flood Risk and River Modelling services during the last 7 years following the move to our offices in Grange Moor, due to the weather and climate change these services are required more and more by our Clients to accompany planning submissions as well as to owners of existing business premises and homeowners who wish to protect their property from flooding events.

We have an excellent Client base with over 96% of our Clients subsequently returning to use our services in the future.

Thank you for your part in assisting us to reach this milestone in the history of our Company, especially during such extremely difficult economic times.

To celebrate our 25 years providing our Engineering Services various events will be happening over the course of the next few months, one of these will afford you the opportunity to win a new Apple iPad so please do keep coming back to see what we are planning!

Hibaldstow Sky Dive

As part of our 25 year celebrations we have also decided to assist local Charities wherever possible, the first of these events will be two brave members of our staff who will be experiencing the UK’s highest sky dive, the 15k Experience!

On the 8th 15K ExperienceSeptember 2012, after a short tandem briefing, both Nicola and Peter will jump harnessed to the front of a fully qualified parachuting instructor from 15,000ft. From this height, they will enjoy one whole adrenaline-fuelled minute of free fall reaching terminal velocity at 120mph.

Something from You..Tandem Canopy

So this is the time we are asking for something from you, Peter and Nicola (who are clearly very brave) have agreed to undertake the highest Sky Dive in the UK with all the sponsorship received going to the Holly Bank Trust, based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire they provide free high quality care to around 100 severely disabled children, young people and adults. This includes a special school, high quality supported accommodation, extensive therapy, nursing support, art, music and engaging activities. Their emphasis on ground breaking assistive technology enables young people to communicate and live their lives as independently as possible. They provide quality of life … for life.

Holly Bank Trust

Below are a few words from both Peter and Nicola, we are aware that times are especially tough for all of us at present, but please do help others by sponsoring Nicola and Peter on this Sky Dive, any amount of sponsorship money will be greatly appreciated by Hollybank Trust.

Peter MauriceMessage from Peter

My name is Peter Maurice and I’ve decided to volunteer myself for the sky dive for several reasons.

Sanderson Associates (Consulting Engineers) Ltd is 25 years old this year, and to celebrate we’ve been asked to undertake an activity for charity. I have worked at Sandersons for ten years, so to celebrate both events I decided to put myself forward for one of the more “interesting” options!

I am also a bit of a thrill seeker. I have previously been abseiling, paragliding (behind a speed boat) and been up in a glider a couple of times. I’ve also cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats in four days.

My current hobby is power kiting (mid life crisis), both on land (in a buggy) and more recently on water (kite surfing).

Therefore the opportunity to do a sky dive appeals to me.

The Hollybank Trust provides a fantastic opportunity for both disabled adults and children, so please sponsor me to enable Hollybank to help others.

Nicola Singleton
Message from Nicola

My name is Nicola Michelle Singleton; I have been very happily married for 3 years and we have a wonderful one year old very active baby boy. In my spare time I enjoy reading, cross-stitching, going out for meals. In particular, I enjoy spending time with my family and seeing all the firsts our baby boy does; this weekend he’s managed to master crawling up the staircase (to my utter shock) and clapping.

I have worked for Sanderson Associates (Consulting Engineers) Ltd for 12 years starting as a junior member of the Support Team to my current position as an Accounts Assistant / PA to Finance Director after returning from Maternity Leave.

A tandem sky dive is something I’ve always wished to do, along with a bungee jump. I have been given this amazing opportunity to do a tandem sky dive for charity in line with the 25th Anniversary of Sanderson Associates (Consulting Engineers) Ltd.

The Hollybank Trust provides a fantastic opportunity for disabled children, so please sponsor me to enable Hollybank to help others.

Sponsor Peter and Nicola

We have joined together to raise money for the Hollybank Trust, we are going for the 15k Experience, the UK’s Highest Sky dive Experience on the 8th September 2012 with Hibaldstow Sky Dive at Hibaldstow Airfield in North Lincolnshire.

Together we need to raise a minimum of £790, however we are hopeful that we will raise more than this for this very worthwhile charity. The £790 covers the cost of the Sky Dive Experience and a donation to the Hollybank Trust; Sanderson Associates have kicked off the process and have already donated £100 which has been paid as our deposit.
